With Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown, the brand’s first hotel in GCC, Africa and India and the first ever boutique hotel in the region, IHG Hotels & Resorts has added a new neighbourhood to its vibrant lifestyle brand.

The flagship property recently opened its doors on the banks of Dubai Creek, only minutes away from the highest man-made structure in the world; the 828 metre high Burj Khalifa skyscraper. So obviously, huge floor to ceiling windows were required to overlook the envy-inducing views of Dubai Water Canal and the Dubai skyline.

Feel part of the destination

Hotel Indigo properties offer a gateway to discover some of the world’s most inspiring locations. Bringing the outside in, each hotel draws on the local area to inspire every aspect, from intriguing interior design by DSGN and GAJ to local flavours on the menu. Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown is no exception, taking inspiration from the story of nearby area to help guests feel part of the unique destination.

Each of the 269 rooms is inspired by the story of Dubai Creek – whether through the surrealist wallpaper created exclusively by local artists, the bespoke shisha lamps or the wardrobes with carved wooden doors, hand-crafted in Mashrabiya style with a modern twist. The spa inspired mother-of-pearl bathrooms pay homage to the country’s proud heritage of pearl diving, while eye-catching vibrant designer furniture adds a contemporary touch to the interior.

Naturally, and in perfect harmony with the remaining décor, the floor surfaces in all rooms, corridors and common areas are brought into play aesthetically with wall-to-wall carpets and custom design rugs.

Rugs as artworks rather than interior details

For centuries, Dubai Creek has been the city’s trading centre. Visitors to the area can still see the hustle and bustle of this fascinating tradition, where wooden boats are docked on the banks of the creek. The creek’s journey is a story of the transformation of Dubai from a trading post to the futuristic city that it is today, and this has influenced the hotel’s overall architectural and interior design approach.

Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown combines the city’s heritage with the new, fresh buzz of the ever-evolving landscape through local collaborations.

When entering their rooms, guests immediately notice the bespoke rugs, generously sized and prominently staged as one of the important interior elements. Designed by various curated artists, each rug is imagined as a work of art and created to be an eye-catching standalone centrepiece in the room. Though the rugs for each type of guest room are individual, they all add personality, ambience and a contemporary touch to the interior.

The design of the rugs adorning the King Rooms was inspired by city skylines, featuring a composition of all the prominent iconic buildings in Dubai, including Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown, highlighted with a striking orange colour. For the King Deluxe Rooms, the designers explored inspirational text and pop art, and the Junior Suite rugs evoke nostalgic memories of squish painting, the art technique that never gets old. Design Suite rugs are based on geometric shapes and patterns.

Constantly remixed traditions

With the story of the neighbourhood in every thoughtfully designed detail and the local influence in every taste and twist, Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown helps guests see the city through a different lens. Using the heritage of Dubai and Emirati culture in a modern setting that incorporates local and international designers, artists and suppliers, the hotel’s interior aims to showcase the electric clash of old and new.

Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown is something of a living gallery itself and as part of the boutique concept, the hotel has partnered with local creatives through their close associations with Alserkal Cultural Foundation, Tashkeel and XVA Gallery. The hotel features an impressive collection of over 200 curated pieces of art and exhibits artworks from not only Emirati artists, but also from Dubai-based expatriates who have drawn inspiration from the city, the Emirati culture and the heritage of local art practices. Each floor of the property is dedicated to one artist, giving guests an opportunity to enjoy stunning art on the way to their room.
